چکیده

We analyze broadband electromagnetic measurements of pulse sequences occurring prior to first return strokes of negative cloud-to-ground lightning flashes. Signals generated by lightning discharges were recorded close to the thunderstorm by a magnetic field receiver and traveled up to 600km to three distant electric field receivers. We found that amplitudes of observed preliminary breakdown pulses, as well as amplitudes of the corresponding return strokes, are attenuated approximately by 2dB/100kmwhen propagating in the Earth-ionosphere waveguide over mountainous terrain. Propagation simulations show that there is a significant contribution of the sky wave signals in the waveforms observed beyond 500 km from their source. The estimated peak currents of the largest preliminary breakdown pulses reach over 60 kA. Such current pulses propagating through in-cloud lightning leader channels in a strong electric field may be able to initiate terrestrial gamma ray flashes.

Pulse trains that are characteristic of preliminary breakdown in cloud-to-ground lightning but are not followed by return stroke pulses

[1] In this study, we identify and examine electric field pulse trains that are characteristic of preliminary breakdown in negative cloud-to-ground discharges but are not followed by return stroke waveforms. We assume that such trains are manifestations of the initiation of downward negative stepped leaders that fail to propagate all the way to the ground and refer to these events as ‘‘attempte...

A Study of Preliminary Breakdown and Return Stroke Processes in High-Intensity Negative Lightning Discharges

Using an automated data processing algorithm, we examined electric field records of 5498 negative cloud-to-ground flashes reported by the U.S. National Lightning Detection Network (NLDN) within 50 to 500 km of the Lightning Observatory in Gainesville (LOG), Florida. Out of the 5498 flashes, 3496 (64%) had detectable preliminary breakdown (PB) pulse trains. Only 3077 flashes with a single PB pul...

ursts of Pulses in Lightning magnetic Radiation: Observations and lications for Lightning Test Standards

Bursts of regular microsecond-scale electric field pulses produced by three multiple-stroke cloud-to-ground discharges (a total of 2782 pulses) and by three cloud discharges (a total of 1436 pulses), all recorded within 20 km or so at the NASA Kennedy Space Center, are analyzed. The regular pulse bursts are similar in both cloud-to-ground and cloud discharges. A burst is characterized by some t...

The Physics of Lightning

An overview of the physics of cloud-to-ground lightning is given, including its initiation, propagation, and attachment to ground. Discharges artificially initiated (triggered) from natural thunderclouds using the rocket-and-wire technique are discussed with a view toward studying properties of natural lightning. Both conventional and runaway breakdown mechanisms of lightning initiation in thun...

Unusually intense continuing current in lightning produces delayed mesospheric breakdown

Ultra low frequency magnetic field measurements made 500–2000 km from positive lightning discharges show a signature that is consistent with unusually high amplitude cloud-to-ground continuing lightning current. The magnitude of this nearly constant current moment is as large as 60 kA km and can last at half this amplitude for longer than 150 ms, thereby moving 640 C or more (assuming a 7 km ve...
